Thanh Phuong Pham Nguyen, PharmD, MBA, MSCE

Dr. Pham Nguyen is a Research Associate in the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Informatics (DBEI) at the University of Pennsylvania, where she works with Dr. Allison W. Willis in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB). She is a pharmacist by training and earned her Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from the University of Kansas in 2013 and an MBA with a concentration in Health Care Administration from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in 2017. She subsequently completed a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE) at the University of Pennsylvania in 2019, followed by postdoctoral training in the Department of Neurology at Penn. Her research focuses on pharmacoepidemiology, with an emphasis on medication appropriateness and safety, and deprescribing strategies for individuals with neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinson disease.
At Penn, Dr. Pham Nguyen leads and collaborates on studies using large administrative claims to evaluate potentially inappropriate medication use, drug–drug and drug–disease interactions, and clinical outcomes among older adults with neurologic conditions. Her work spans observational comparative effectiveness and safety research, pragmatic clinical trials, and patient-centered deprescribing interventions aimed at improving medication safety and the quality of care for vulnerable populations.
Her research has been presented at national and international scientific meetings. She is also the recipient of a Pilot Award from the U.S. Deprescribing Research Network to conduct a pilot trial evaluating deprescribing of antimuscarinic medications in older adults with Parkinson disease.
